6 Steps To Finding A Producer For Your First Song Release - One That Actually Cares!

When I started out and was looking for my first producer, I was just 13 years old. This could have gone one of two ways! One, they saw parents with money, and they would squeeze us for every penny, or two, they would see a 13-year-old girl who spent her entire school holiday periods busking to make money to record her first EP and treat her well!

Thank the lord it was the latter of the two! But we aren't all that lucky. I learnt early in my career that people were almost always only going to help if something was there for them. In saying that, I understand that there should be give and take and of course, in business, people need to make money. But! That doesn't mean they should be able to squeeze you for everything you have and not have any interest in what you're doing.

Have you felt like that? Gone to see producers who just don't seem to care as much as they should? Or you haven't really thought about how important the connection between you and your producer is? Let me...

3 Steps To Deal With Overwhelm When Releasing Your First Song!

mindset music release Jun 15, 2022

Have you ever been so overwhelmed that you look at everything you have to do and although you're excited about releasing that first song... the overwhelm kicks in! Fear, self-doubt, there is just so much to do, learn, organise, and so in the end .. it's easier to do nothing... but then you feel guilty because everyone else seems to be able to do it? Well, you're not alone, and many of those artists who manage to get out their first song undoubtedly struggled with a lot of the same feelings.

There are still days in this Shape Music business where I feel overwhelmed. This week is one of those weeks. I feel like there is so much to do, so little time to do it, and I feel like I don't even know where to start! But the difference is that I have felt this many times in my life, and I have put measures in place to help me move past it. My students tell me that they feel like the process of releasing their first song is just so overwhelming that they don't bother to start because...

Release Your Music Right The First Time - 3 Release Mistakes That Cost Me 40k!

I think for most indie artists, the topic of money is a sore one. We create music first and foremost because we love it, and most of the time, any kind of income is a bonus, but at some point, we need to make money!

So when I released my first album ten years ago (after my first one as a kid), I wanted to do it properly. So I went to the bank, and I got a loan for 40k. I was scared, but I knew that I needed to invest in myself to make this first release a success! I needed to release with a bang.. have the album bring in all of the adoring fans, race up the charts and make me an instant star. Instead, I wasted pretty much all of it. Thankfully I had a pretty decent first album regarding the quality, but the release overall was a total flop. I felt like crap, an absolute failure!

After my first release, I was pretty devastated. I wanted to give up, but anyone who knows me knows that I was born with an inherent inability to give up, even when I probably should.

So I...

Dealing With Self-Doubt? Me Too! But These Things Help!

If you can honestly say that you have never felt or dealt with self-doubt, then you would either be one of the luckiest people on earth or a liar. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people out there that have never experienced self-doubt, but I doubt that I could find one.

What I am saying is that self-doubt is a very common thing. It's a sucky thing, but it is common, and it can be detrimental to the musician trying to build a music career.

Now, I realise that you may be confident on stage; I mean, that's why we perform, we love it, and that's where we shine, but come off that stage, and it's a whole other story!  Self-doubt and lack of confidence start to creep in, and trust me, if you don't deal with it, if you don't tackle it head-on, it will prevent you from moving forward and reaching your goals. It will make you question your every move until you start to self destruct and destroy the work you have put in.

I wanna give you three...

3 Ways To Get More Spotify Streams

music marketing May 26, 2022

Streaming music is the dominant way for music listeners to consume music in 2022. Of course, we don't all love it, but that's how it is! I've had tons of students ask me why Spotify isn't streaming their music even though it's good?

Getting thousands, tens or even hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify might seem impossible. But, while it's not necessarily super easy, it is totally possible!

Imagine waking up to thousands of streams on your brand new single! It's an insane feeling to know that literally thousands of people have been listening to your new music .. so .. how do you make that possible?

Here are three ways to get more streams on your Spotify!

1. Make it the only streaming option in your marketing campaign: Personally, I am an Apple Music girl. I have a subscription and prefer to use it over Spotify. But as an artist, you want to give your listeners as many options as possible. So you tell them, "stream my song on Spotify, Apple Music or Google...

I Left My Record Deal After Realising This

I remember back in the early 90s when I was about 7 watching the ARIA awards (Australia's equivalent to the Grammy's), and I watched the performances and the awards, and I thought... I want to do that! I want to sign a record deal.

Unfortunately, it would be many years until I got my shit together and started applying myself.

As I grew older, I set my sites on a record deal! I knew that I needed to get a record deal to feel fulfilled and like I was achieving my dreams. After many years of being an independent artist, in 2017, I finally signed a record deal. I was ecstatic, and rightfully so, because I had achieved one of my biggest dreams, I had fulfilled one of the biggest goals I had set for myself, AND the record label was amazing! They treated me so well!

My very first release with them saw a #2 ARIA country chart position and a #4 Australian ARIA chart position. This meant that I had the second highest-selling album in my country on the week of release. Now...

Why You Need Spotify Even Though It Pays Poorly

music marketing spotify May 11, 2022

There is a bit of back and forth in the music industry around streaming and how much an artist actually gets from streaming platforms such as Spotify. Some say it's just not worth it and that we should stay away from streaming platforms and just sell our music at our shows.

While I definitely agree that it is frustrating to be paid peanuts for our music, I do not agree that we shouldn't put our music on the platforms. Unless you're Taylor freakin Swift, who doesn't need the extra pocket money and doesn't need the exposure, you should be on there! Streaming is here to stay, and if you want to be here to stay, you better jump on board the stream train ... choo choo!

Here are three compelling reasons why!

1. It's an inexpensive marketing tool: I think some of the people that tell you to stay off Spotify could be some of the same that are against music marketing and believe your "music should speak for itself". However, when you have music to sell, you have a...

How I Sell My Music And Make Money

sell your music May 04, 2022

Are you creating music and wondering how you're actually going to sell it? You're not alone! It's a question that I am asked regularly, so in this blog, I will talk about 3 ways of the most basic ways that you can sell your music!

I still use these 3 methods to sell my own music. Is it the only way I make my income? Absolutely not! I have multiple income streams, all within the music industry. But selling my music is one of them.

Before you sell your music, you should know that you have to take it seriously. People don't buy crap, these 3 ways to sell music are not magic potions, so if you're music sucks, they aren't gonna help you sell it. It's like going to the grocery store and seeing your favourite chocolates all lined up; one of them is squashed, the wrapping is all torn, and caramel is seeping out onto the other chocolates. You're not gonna buy that chocolate bar! So don't do that with your music. Instead, make sure you've got good quality recordings and...

How To Make A Living In The Music Industry

Being self-employed can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be challenging. Filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and if you happen to be an artist trying to make a living in the music industry, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

But then throw a global pandemic in the mix, and we are all in trouble! During the pandemic, the music industry was one of the hardest-hit industries, and many of my musician friends didn't make it through. They either found new jobs or began learning new skills, and I found that completely heartbreaking. But the truth is, it doesn't even take a global pandemic to see that happen; the pandemic just brought it to our attention. Unfortunately, this happens daily in the music industry. So many artists give up because it's just too difficult to make a living in the music industry.

The best way to make a living in the music industry, or anywhere for that matter, is to have multiple income streams. This means that you...

Before investing money, you can do many things to start and advance your music career. However, investing time and effort in the beginning stage of your career will see benefits money you can't buy.

In this blog, I will give you 3 things that you can do right now that won't cost you any money but will help you start to build a successful music career.
