3 Reasons You Hear Crickets When You Release Music!

marketing music release Aug 24, 2022

Have you released music before, and all you heard were crickets? If not, let me ask you this! Have you posted on social media, and all you heard were crickets?

It's bloody frustrating! I know! I spent years trying to get my audience to engage with me. I know how critical engagement is, and if you're building a music career or at least trying to, you've probably heard about how important engagement is too.

And it's essential for a few reasons. But the main reason you need people to engage with you is to grow your fanbase, and you want to grow your fanbase so that when you spend all of that time and money on creating your art and recording your music, people are going to listen!

Don't make the mistake of thinking that people should listen just because you record something. I think they should! But in reality, we are bombarded with choices, and if someone takes time to listen to your music, then it's a real privilege.

When I released my first single, I was SO excited! I...

Do I Need To Market Differently In My Country?

If you've watched any of my videos or have listened to my podcast, then you would catch on pretty quickly that I'm Australian. So a question that I am often asked is, "do I need to market differently because I live in another country?"

The answer is no! And that's how I can help everyone all over the world with the content I create. Marketing, in general, has the same fundamental principles no matter where you are in the world. There are 3 fundamental things that, when implemented, will allow you to market to your audience successfully no matter where you live in the world.

Let's take a look at those 3 things!

1. Know your brand -  What do I mean by this? You have to know what you're selling. You should have a very clear vision as to the kind of artist you are. This includes the way you dress, communicate, and interact with your fans, the genre of music you release in, your beliefs and values, and how you want to portray yourself to the world as an artist.

3 Tips For A Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

crowdfunding marketing Jun 16, 2021

Crowdfunding is a fantastic way to involve your fans and raise funds needed to move your music career forward. I think that sometimes it can have that stigma of "asking for money," but to me, this never made sense because all you are doing is basically asking your fans to pre-order your project.

I have completed one crowdfunding campaign where the target was $5000, which ended with a little over $6000. I did a few things to make sure that it was going to be successful, and I want to share 3 of those tips with you.

Before I get into those, I suggest that you do some research on the best crowdfunding platform. Some platforms won't release the funds you make if you don't reach your goal amount, meaning that you have put a lot of time and effort in and won't receive anything in return. Check out the platform's fees and how much they will take from your project so you can make sure it is worth it.  Lastly, check out the other campaigns on the platform, how they are set...

BRANDING! Actually.. What The Hell Is Branding?

Do you ever find yourself reading music career advice or listening to advice, and they talk about branding and how important it is to a hugely successful career? I sure did.. I'm like ... well I'm not a box of Coco Pops, and I'm not NIKE so why the hell do I need a brand.. and for that matter what is a brand?

Look, you will be told many things throughout your career by many people who might have some knowledge, but no experience, or maybe vice versa, but one thing they aren't wrong about is branding, and it's importance, so what is it?

Think of your music career as an entity like NIKE or McDonalds or Target, you sell music, so in essence, you have a business, so you must work like one.

These days the world is one of consumerism. I wish I was listening to my year 12  business teacher more when he was delivering this information. What does that mean? Well, we, as a world like to acquire and consume things, and there are many, many, many things out in the world ready...

How To Make Your Brand Make You Money!

brand career marketing money Aug 30, 2020

So we know that a brand is everything that you encompass as an artist, and I always babble on about how important it is to grow your brand. Well, there is a reason for that! Your brand is worth money! If you purchase a house, more often then not,  you will build equity over the years that you own the property. Just like the equity in your home, you can build equity into your brand.

Yep, that's right! Your brand is an asset! Meaning, it works to bring you the dollars! Here is an example:

Artist A is an extremely talented artist who engages really well with a crowd, can sing like no one else on the planet and has a polished overall look, but, not many people know him as he doesn't market himself or concentrate on the growth of his business, he prefers to focus on his craft.

Artist B is a decent artist, who engages with the crowd, vocals are ok, but they are unique, and the overall look is pretty good. They aren't as talented as Artist A and haven't been playing...

What Is A Publicist And Do I Need One?

In this episode of the podcast, I talk with good friend and owner of KrisKat Publicity - Kris Katsanis. We cover a bunch of your questions and really get to know what a publicist's job entails.

1. What is a publicist? A publicist is a middleman between you and the media.

2. What is the role of a publicist? A publicist has a contact database usually far more significant than any artist. A publicist has also built a relationship with many different media sources; it is therefor the role of the publicist to take your music to the media and then follow them up requesting interviews, spots in magazine or newspapers and some cases television. However great the publicist, the quality of the project will always determine the level of media response.

3. How can a publicist help an artist? An artist is usually extremely good at their craft; they dedicate their time to developing and creating a product. While as an independent artist we will wear many hats,...

What Is A Brand And Why Do I Need One?

After chatting with Perrin Finlay-Brown from Market The Music, we now have an understanding of what a brand is and why we need one! Perrin is a marketing professional with over a decade of experience working with branding and has combined his talents for marketing, management and graphic design to create a company that develops and promotes the career of an artist.

I asked a plethora of questions relating specifically to independent artists and their need for a brand. Here are the key takeaways:

1. What is a brand? A brand is the way in which you present your package as an artist to the market. The holistic delivery of that package will help you carve out your little space within the industry. This means analysing yourself and creating a brand from who you are. Looking at everything from the sound that you have, the way you dress, how you talk, the way you interact with people and generally how you present yourself.

2. What is a...

3 Reasons Why An Independent Artist Should Have An Email List

We need to take advantage of all of the marketing tools available to us, but a lot of artists tend to forget about one of the most important!

Developing an Email List! Email is a direct contact to your supporters that have already taken the time out to sign up to your list, meaning, they have already put their hand up and said: "yes, I like what you do".

As an artist, we need to grow our list and maintain an active relationship with the subscribers. Unlike Social Media, if you send an email, it reaches your whole list, you don't need to pay for people that are already on your list to see your emails.

If you haven't started your email list, then there is no better time to start then now! If you have started it, concentrate on growing and nurturing it. Your list can be a very valuable asset because when you are ready to release and sell a new product, they are an already engaged, interested audience.

Do Independent Artists Really Need To Use Social Media?

With the current crisis, we are all facing, especially within the music industry, NOW is when you ABSOLUTELY need social media! I will be creating an episode very soon around ways we can stay pro-active and keep out heads above water in this unprecedented time.

Social Media platforms are our own dedicated space on the internet, our own little part of the world where we can build and grow a loyal community of supporters. Sure with the algorithms always changing, it can be challenging, but business as a whole is challenging and perhaps more challenging then it has ever been in the time you and I have been alive.

Make the most of the social media opportunity; it's not something we have always had available. It creates more opportunities for those who are willing to work on it. Stay consistent and produce valuable content for your supporters, they will appreciate it, and it will grow their trust and loyalty for your brand.

There are a few DO's and DON'Ts when it...
