Are You Not Releasing Music Because You Feel Like An Imposter? Here Are 3 Ways To Crush That Feeling

mindset Sep 21, 2022

Do you feel like you’re not good enough? Or maybe you need a little more time to get it right? Or perhaps just a little more time to practice so you can improve? At what point are you ready? And at what point are you procrastinating because you’re scared that you might just not be good enough? Maybe you just feel like an imposter?

This is what we call imposter syndrome.

But! There is good news! You’re not the only one that feels like this! I really believe that most people feel like this. The only difference is the way we deal with it. How do you handle those thoughts and feelings of not being good enough? Or not being ready? Or the thought I have most often… ”who are you to be doing this”?

When those thoughts present themselves, what do you do? What is your thought process, and how do you overcome those feelings, or do you give into them?

Feeling like an imposter can stop you in your tracks. It will play tricks on your mind and hold you...

3 Things To Do When Friends And Family Don’t Support Your Career…

mindset Jul 06, 2022

Study hard, grow up, get a good job, buy a house, get married and start your family. That’s how most of us are taught to live our lives… then along comes us! Mum… I wanna be a musician … at that point, some of us are lucky to have the support of family and friends and others… well, not so much!

One of my artist friends in the music industry posted an Instagram story this week because she is really excited that she has new music coming out. Now, this artist is quite a decorated artist, with lots of radio play, chart spots, big award nominations and overall, I would say she has a very successful music career. So she posted one of those “yes or no” interactive things on Instagram and asked who was looking forward to her releasing her new music and one of her family friends clicked “no”. So she took to Instagram and said, you know it’s hard enough for artists as it is, let alone having to put up with family friends doing...

3 Steps To Deal With Overwhelm When Releasing Your First Song!

mindset music release Jun 15, 2022

Have you ever been so overwhelmed that you look at everything you have to do and although you're excited about releasing that first song... the overwhelm kicks in! Fear, self-doubt, there is just so much to do, learn, organise, and so in the end .. it's easier to do nothing... but then you feel guilty because everyone else seems to be able to do it? Well, you're not alone, and many of those artists who manage to get out their first song undoubtedly struggled with a lot of the same feelings.

There are still days in this Shape Music business where I feel overwhelmed. This week is one of those weeks. I feel like there is so much to do, so little time to do it, and I feel like I don't even know where to start! But the difference is that I have felt this many times in my life, and I have put measures in place to help me move past it. My students tell me that they feel like the process of releasing their first song is just so overwhelming that they don't bother to start because...

Dealing With Self-Doubt? Me Too! But These Things Help!

If you can honestly say that you have never felt or dealt with self-doubt, then you would either be one of the luckiest people on earth or a liar. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people out there that have never experienced self-doubt, but I doubt that I could find one.

What I am saying is that self-doubt is a very common thing. It's a sucky thing, but it is common, and it can be detrimental to the musician trying to build a music career.

Now, I realise that you may be confident on stage; I mean, that's why we perform, we love it, and that's where we shine, but come off that stage, and it's a whole other story!  Self-doubt and lack of confidence start to creep in, and trust me, if you don't deal with it, if you don't tackle it head-on, it will prevent you from moving forward and reaching your goals. It will make you question your every move until you start to self destruct and destroy the work you have put in.

I wanna give you three...

imposter syndrome mindset Dec 15, 2021

Imposter syndrome, it's a real thing ... and it's a real scary thing too! Imposter syndrome is when you doubt your abilities so much that you feel like a fraud or a fake. Imposter syndrome can kill your confidence, induce crippling self-doubt and self-belief, and it can hold you back substantially in your life.

I get it all of the time! I think most people experience it throughout their life. The difference is learning to recognise it and how we process and deal with it.

Imposter syndrome can kill your motivation, determination and drive, and it can be overall incredibly detrimental to your mental health and career. When you experience imposter syndrome, you won't act. Your fear will block your paths forward. It can stop you from making good business decisions because you might believe you can't make them.

Their stories all sound the same; whether they knew the secret of mindset or not, they all had geared their mindset for success.

I remember watching Oprah, and she was talking to Michael Buble, who said he would keep his bible under his pillow and every single night as he went to sleep, would think of his life as a famous singer. He talked about how his...

How Mindset Can Change Your life - Music & Mindset (part 2 of 4)

Welcome to part 2 of the Music & Mindset series!

In this part of the series, I want to delve into how mindset can change your life.

Now you may have hit rock bottom, and you just can't take any more of not moving forward, not seeing success, or maybe you just want to do better than you are already, whatever your goal, the only way you can make it happen is to change your mindset.

Your brain is on a loop:
- Most of us make one big mistake in our lives, and the majority of us don't even know it! We jump out of the driver's seat and put our brains on autopilot... this is why so many people have failing relationships. They take the same patterns and behaviours from one relationship to the next, and it's also why many big lottery winners end up more broke than they were before winning because they have patterns and behaviours on a loop. Most of the time, we don't even notice that we are doing the same things over and over, repeating the same mistakes until it's too late.

mindset Jun 30, 2021

Whether you're heading into an audition, or you are doing a radio interview, or you're on stage performing, nerves can be completely debilitating!

Nerves literally turn me into the worst singer in the room. Most of my vocal skill comes from the ability to support my voice and use my techniques well, so when this system fails me, I am left with just the sound of my voice to impress people and unfortunately, I wasn't born with a tone that is .. well let's say hugely appealing.

So I have spent years and years getting to a point where I can control my nerves. Now I am not suggesting that you put in years of work to get to that point, but I do have 3 tips that will help you calm your nerves enough to get you through with a great outcome.

Nerves will suck the talent out of you if you let them! So here are my 3 favourite tips/pieces of advice that I have collected over the years to help me control my nerves. When you start to implement these, you will notice a huge difference!

3 Reasons Why Making Excuses Kills Your Music Career

mindset Jun 23, 2021

Ok, I know I will probably be in trouble for this one, but I feel compelled to write it because there was a time that I was the queen of making excuses for why I wasn't successful, why I hadn't done what I said I was going to, why I procrastinate. You name the excuse, and I have used it.

It wasn't until I started taking responsibility and living proactively that I was able to see results. But, of course, we all do it some time or another; I think it's human nature to make excuses for not doing something, for things not going right etc. But at what point are those excuses holding you back?

I see it often, especially in the music industry. But, if you can take a moment to ask yourself what the real reason is for you not completing a task or not succeeding, you can start to change your career path.

Here are 3 reasons for putting a stop to making excuses!

1. You're Convincing Yourself That There Is No Problem:
When you make an excuse for why you can't do something, or you haven't...
